La Torche sits at the southern tip of Audierne Bay where a rocky headland deflects swell energy onto a sandy bottom, producing a reliable A-frame peak that works across virtually all tide stages. The rights are shorter and notably hollower, pitching over the shallower sand near the rocks before feeding directly into a strong seaward rip locally called 'the elevator' - a current that runs straight back to the takeoff zone and makes the paddle game significantly easier. The lefts are longer and faster, peeling down the beach in the 50-100m range, though the return paddle against any significant shore break earns its reputation as a grind. Wave faces tend toward steep and slopey rather than critical, with a medium pace that suits progression surfing. Swell from SW through W and into NW wraps into the bay effectively, and the spot's exposure and sandy bottom give it one of the higher consistency ratings on this stretch of coastline. Easterly winds provide the cleanest conditions. A free car park with road and hard-standing access makes getting in straightforward. On bigger days, the mellow point break at the headland tip offers an alternative. Further north, Tronoën and Penhors provide additional options when the main peak is overwhelmed. Weekends from spring through autumn bring genuine crowds - all skill levels, all craft types. The spot's fame, facilities, and beginner-friendly reputation mean the lineup fills fast when conditions show any sign of cooperating.
