Gwendrez is a beach break sitting over uneven reef and sand at Plouhinec on Brittany's southwest-facing coast. The outer sandbars do most of the work at low to mid tide, throwing up fast, hollow peaks with legitimate tube potential when the banks align. Walls wedge quickly and sections can square off hard, so the wave rewards surfers who commit early. The trade-off is consistency - this place closes out far more often than it performs, and it takes a solid SW to NW swell to coax the sandbars into producing rideable shape. The spot earned its reputation through images of bodyboarders pulling into heavy barrels approaching 3m, and those conditions are real, even if they arrive rarely. A secondary feature worth noting is a left that breaks off the rocks at the southern end - it surfaces infrequently but can be a serious wave when it does. NE winds are ideal, keeping the face clean across both zones. With size, rips and lateral currents become a genuine issue and the spot is not appropriate for average ability surfers once the surf goes overhead. A free carpark sits close to the beach, making access straightforward. The surrounding area, which sits adjacent to a Paleolithic site, adds to the sense that this stretch of coastline rewards exploration beyond just the main peak.
