La Gamelle is a reef peak sitting roughly 200m offshore in Cap Sizun, Brittany, marked today by a metallic beacon that once served as a warning to vessels that discovered the submerged structure the hard way. The break fires as an A-frame, peeling both ways over an uneven mix of reef and sand. The right-hander is the shorter, hollower option - a fast, punchy wall that throws quickly over the shallower sections of the reef. The left offers a slightly longer ride and a more workable shape, though both sides demand commitment on the takeoff. Boils across the lineup signal the shallow reef heads below. The spot needs a solid SW to NW swell to come alive - it sits in the 1-2m to nearly 2m range on optimal days - and it only really earns attention when exposed points and beaches in the area are already swamped. A southerly wind is the call. Mid to high tide is the window; the incoming tide is particularly favoured. When conditions align, a bodyboard shorebreak also develops at high tide. The 200m paddle from the beach is a workout, and strong rips run offshore, so only competent intermediates and above should attempt it. Active boat traffic in the area adds another variable to manage. Consistency is low - this spot sits dormant for long stretches - but when the swell is running and everywhere else is overwhelmed, La Gamelle fills fast with surfers who know it.
