Surf spot guide · Coral Coast, Fiji
A punchy, consistent rivermouth on Fiji's Coral Coast, mostly a left with rights into the river, set off a sandy beach in front of the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park.
Sigatoka Rivermouth sits on Fiji's Coral Coast, right in front of the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park. These are the only genuine dunes anywhere on Viti Levu, and they carry deep historical and cultural importance. A sandy beach break like this makes a welcome change for surfers worn out by reef. Deep water lies just offshore, so the beach picks up every westerly swell, with southwest, west and northwest all on the menu. The rivermouth mostly serves up a demanding left, and rights peel off into the river on higher tides and in the rainy season. Waves here are punchy and run from about 1 to 3 metres. Small swells can make it fairly mellow, but as the size builds it starts breaking out on the reef and runs left across the rivermouth, turning into a serious challenge. Every stage of the tide can work. Look for wind from the north, northeast or east. Get to the beach break early in the morning, because it goes ragged as soon as the breeze arrives. Swell turns up here on a regular basis, so it makes a dependable option. Intermediate and advanced surfers will get the most out of it. Crowds are usually light. After a session the local crew wind down at Club Masa over beers or kava.

HAZARDS · KNOW BEFORE YOU PADDLE
From Nadi, take the main highway heading south toward Suva. Go a few kilometres beyond the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park visitor centre and take the right turn straight after the railway bridge. The dirt tracks can be confusing, so stay on the one heading for Club Masa, a surf resort. The village gate on that track may be shut, in which case you park and cover roughly a kilometre on foot to Club Masa, then another 500 metres or so to the beach. Parking means handing a small fee to the local villagers. Getting there is moderately tricky.
