Surf spot guide · Namotu, Fiji
Cloudbreak is a world-class left reef pass off Namotu in Fiji, breaking in separate sections from a big outside peak down to a razor-shallow inside, and it is strictly for advanced surfers.
Cloudbreak is a world-class left that peels across a reef pass out in the waters off Namotu, Fiji. Rides can stretch from 200 to 500 metres on a wave that is hollow, fast and punchy. Few waves combine this much power and hollowness with such length, and it stays consistent while handling really big swells. Photos make it look like perfect barrels for anyone, but the wave has several sections and a mean streak that keeps even the best surfers alert. Up at the Point, the top end of the reef, the outside takes plenty of size, with steep drops leading onto a fast wall where you can lay down speedy carves. Through Middles the tube begins to spin up and the wave covers ground quickly, leaving less room for turns. The inside, called Insides or Shish-kabobs, runs over very shallow reef and throws wild, heavy tubes. The three sections seldom connect, but on a huge, long-period SSW swell they can join into one of the great rides in surfing. The reef works through every stage of the tide. A southwest swell suits it best, though anything from south round to west will get it going, and it handles waves from roughly 0.9 m up to 7.6 m. Hope for a southeast wind, and plan your trip between April and October. Lively trade winds can put some bump on the face, so expect texture on windier days. You get out there by boat, a short run from the island of Tavarua. A resort on Tavarua used to control who could surf the pass, but a change in Fijian law ended that, so the wave is now open to other surfers. A seat on a boat costs a fair amount, so budget for it.

Heavy, high-stakes proving ground
The break sits a short boat ride from the resort on Tavarua, so sorting out a place to stay within reach is fairly straightforward. Fiji's surf breaks have been free for everyone to ride since 2010, but in August 2026 parliament voted through the Commercial Use of Marine Areas Bill, which repeals that 2010 law once it is officially brought into force, so access arrangements and any fees may change and it is worth checking with your boat operator before you go.
