Surf spot guide · Coral Coast, Fiji
A hollow, punchy reef A-frame on Fiji's Coral Coast, close to the Shangri-La Fijian Resort, that fires on a rising to high tide in south to west swells and suits advanced surfers.
Lulu's Bend sits at the mouth of a deep bay on Fiji's Coral Coast, with reef peaks breaking on either side of the entrance. Its nearest neighbour is the Shangri-La resort, and the wave takes its other name, Fijian, from it. The reef shapes an A-frame, and the waves come through hollow and punchy over rides of roughly 50 to 100 metres. Depending on swell direction, the wave bends around the reef into a hollow takeoff, then offers a few sections before it closes out. The north peak hisses along the reef and then shuts down over reef that is almost bone dry. On the south side, the left tends to finish the same way. That left opens straight off the takeoff, but it runs very fast and short before closing. Come on a rising or high tide, which is when the barrels show up. Swell anywhere from south round to west gets it going, with a straight south swell the pick. Expect waves from about 0.9 metres up to around 3 metres. For wind, the rights like anything out of the north, while the lefts want glassy conditions or a northeast to east breeze. The prime season runs from April to October. This is a wave for advanced surfers only. You can reach the peak by boat or simply paddle out yourself. Either way, the trip out is shorter than the one at Natadola. The local resort runs a boat that leaves you at the break for two hours, for about 20 dollars.
