Surf spot guide · Namotu, Fiji
Desperations is a hollow, punchy reef A-frame off Namotu in Fiji, reached by boat, that picks up southerly swell when the rest of the area goes quiet.
Desperations is a reef break near Namotu in Fiji, with a peak that peels both left and right. Its big selling point is reliability, since it grabs pretty much any swell from the south and often has something rideable when other breaks are flat. Expect a fast, hollow wave with plenty of punch. South to southwest swells light it up best, and it holds waves up to about two metres. Winds from the north or northeast clean it up, and the dropping tide is the time to aim for. You will need a boat to get out there, so getting to the break takes some planning. The prime season here is June to September, though good waves often stretch it out from April to October. This is a spot for intermediate and advanced surfers rather than beginners.
When everything else is flat, Desperations often still has a wave.
