Surf spot guide · Namotu, Fiji
A fast, hollow left over shallow coral just off Tavarua, peeling in sight of the resort's diners, running a little smaller than Cloudbreak and strictly for experts.
Restaurants is a left-hand reef break just off Tavarua, a resort island, peeling in plain sight of anyone eating at the resort. The wave is fast, hollow and punchy, and a ride can run anywhere from 200 to 500 metres. Because the lip throws so predictably, a session here mixes barrels and big lip-bashing turns in roughly equal parts. If you have the skills, you can pull in seriously deep. Think of it as the go-to alternative to Cloudbreak, always breaking a touch smaller than its big brother. Where Cloudbreak turns up reliably, Restaurants is far more fickle. On its day, though, the long, hollow walls come close to perfection. South to southwest swells wrap neatly around the reef, and while anything from south through to west can work, southwest is the ideal angle. Winds from the south to southeast, with southeast the best of them, iron the surface flat. It handles surf from about 0.9 metres up to around 3.7 metres. April through October is the window to plan your trip around. Plan to paddle out on the rising tide or at high tide. Once the tide drops low, the ridged, uneven coral clashes with the wave's clean shape and things get far too dangerous. Even though it runs smaller than Cloudbreak, this remains strictly an experts' wave. Guests at the resort can cross the reef on foot and paddle out, or catch the resort boat to a drop-off beyond the break. Tavarua has gentler options too, including Kiddieland for beginners and Tavarua Rights on smaller swells.

Watch the tide closely, because its state makes a big difference here, and aim for the push or the top of the tide.
Look at Restaurants as the fallback when you want something a little smaller than Cloudbreak.
Beginners in your crew can ride Kiddieland, soft rollers lined up with the Tavarua bar that suit soft-tops and SUPs and break nearly every day.
On small swells, Tavarua Rights gives playful walls that turn into clean blue tubes when the wind drops and the water goes glassy off the south end of the island.

If you are staying at the Tavarua resort, you can walk and paddle out over the reef, or have the resort boat drop you outside the break. Surfers staying elsewhere reach the break by boat from the neighbouring islands. Fiji's surf breaks have been free for everyone to ride since 2010, but in August 2026 parliament voted through the Commercial Use of Marine Areas Bill, which repeals that 2010 law once it is officially brought into force, so access arrangements and any fees may change and it is worth checking with your boat operator before you go.
