Surf spot guide · Coral Coast, Fiji
Hideaway is a quick, hollow right-hand reef break on Fiji's Coral Coast, reached by a long paddle from the resort and at its best on a high or dropping tide with a northerly breeze.
Hideaway is a right-hander that breaks over coral reef on Fiji's Coral Coast. Expect a quick, hollow wave that throws a tight tube, tends to close out in sections and turns heavy once sets climb past head height. Rides usually last somewhere between 50 and 100 metres. Swell from anywhere between southeast and southwest will get it going, with southwest the pick of the bunch. Aim for high tide or a falling tide, with the wind coming from the north. When the southeast trade winds kick in, the wave gets torn apart. It handles surf from roughly 0.6 to 2.4 metres, and things get far more intense above about six feet. Waves can show up in any month, though the most consistent stretch runs from May to October. This is a break for intermediate and advanced surfers, and intermediates especially need to get to their feet fast. Get up early, lock in your rail and pull into the tube, then hold your speed through the last section until you are out over deep water. The break sits off the Queens Highway, directly facing Hideaway Resort. Getting out means a paddle of around 500 metres from the resort, though a boat ride is also an option. Out in the water, the crew tends to be relaxed and welcoming.
