Surf spot guide · Coral Coast, Fiji
Frigates is a world-class left that breaks hollow over a remote barrier reef off Fiji's Coral Coast, reachable only by boat and best left to experienced surfers.
Frigates is a left that peels along a coral barrier reef out in open water. Quality here is world-class, with hollow, punchy waves and rides that run a long way down the reef. Thick, fast and bowly, it is strictly a wave for experienced surfers. Much like Cloudbreak, the reef handles everything from small days right up to huge swell. Up to around 6 ft the wave stays fairly manageable, offering hollow walls that wrap along the reef. Swells from SE round to SW can work, with SW the ideal angle, and the wave is very fussy about direction. Once it gets big, the inside Bowl section throws seriously scary barrels as the swell bends over a knuckle of coral. East wind is the best bet, while NE is fine on the outside and SE blows straight offshore on the inside sections. Strong wind can chop up the face and make getting into waves a lot harder. The main season runs from April to October, when the Southern Hemisphere swells arrive. You can only get out there by boat, and most surfers stay at the surf camps on Yanutha Island, roughly halfway between the reef and Viti Levu.

Pack a rain jacket and a warm layer, since the boat trip can be long, rough and wet when the wind is up.
The sets that break a little further out tend to be longer and quicker, and they are often the pick at around 5 to 7 ft.
