Surf spot guide · Suva, Fiji
A mellow right-hand reef break at the entrance to Suva Harbour, just a few minutes by boat from the yacht club in Suva.
Lighthouse is a right-hand reef break sitting in the mouth of Suva Harbour, right in the shipping channel that cuts through the reef. Don't mix it up with the other Lighthouse out near Mini Cloudbreak. It's a better wave than you might expect to find here. The wave itself is on the mellow side, fun but without a lot of punch, though it can get a bit sloppy. Rides usually run somewhere between 50 and 100 metres, and it handles waves from around 0.6 up to 2.4 metres. Intermediate and advanced surfers will get the most out of it. Swell from anywhere between southeast and southwest can reach it, with a straight south swell the pick. A northwesterly wind suits it best. The catch is that Suva faces straight into the southeast trade winds, so blown-out onshore conditions are the norm much of the time. Expect an inconsistent spot that barely breaks in winter, when the trades blow day after day. Around the region, March, April and October tend to bring the best surf. Think of it as a good way to get wet while you are in Suva rather than a wave worth travelling for. If you are planning a dedicated surf trip, the islands off Fiji's west coast are the better bet.

Mellow city reef right
Coral Coast
A long, hollow right over reef on Fiji's Coral Coast, reached by boat, that starts with an angled roll-in, gives you shoulders to cut back on through the middle, then turns sucky over the shallow inside reef.
Coral Coast
Frigates is a world-class left that breaks hollow over a remote barrier reef off Fiji's Coral Coast, reachable only by boat and best left to experienced surfers.
Head out in the morning, when it tends to be at its best.
Keep watch for days with a northwesterly wind, since the usual trades leave it blown out.
