Surf spot guide · Coral Coast, Fiji
A reef pass on Fiji's Coral Coast with two rights: Shifties, a long and powerful outside peak, and Jays, a smaller, hollow inside wave for experts.
Vunaniu is a reef pass on Fiji's Coral Coast with two right-handers about 800 metres apart. The outer one, Shifties, pulls in even a whisper of swell whatever the tide is doing. Rides can run 100 to 200 metres, and the wave spreads across a broad stretch of reef. Expect real power and push, with the first peak often breaking big. As the swell bends around the reef, its walls set you up for big carving cutbacks back toward the pocket. Shifties copes with plenty of size, and winds from west through to northeast are workable, with a northerly the pick. Intermediate surfers can have a great time out there on smaller and mid-sized days. Far inside sits Jays, which always breaks a lot smaller than the outside peak. When the swell and wind carry more west in them, it turns into a fast, all-out barrel that is strictly for experts. Surf it on a much higher tide so you do not get trapped inside, and pay close attention to where you sit. Over on the other side of the channel, Black Rock serves up more intense rights that throw off a ledge. Swells from southeast round to southwest all reach the pass, with a southwesterly being ideal. The main season runs from April to October, when South Pacific winter lows send in steady groundswell. Rideable surf here ranges from around 0.6 metres up to roughly 3.7 metres.

At Jays, getting your positioning right is everything.
If you want Jays to barrel, look for a bit of west in both the swell and the wind.
On a smaller day, Shifties is the friendlier option for intermediates.
