Sticks is a reef break on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast that works well for beginners and intermediates. Small waves stay soft and easy, while bigger swells give more speed and occasional barreling sections for confident surfers. The lineup is wide, so it rarely feels crowded, and the entry from the restaurant is simple. Busy when the surf schools are out there, but also strangely quiet at times. Always quiet when it’s big. Lineup Positioning: Paddle to the far south or north of the peak and find some waves for yourself. Wave Targeting: Wait for the ones which have a shoulder as if they look like they are going to close-out they will. Tips & Progression Focus: Cutbacks on the lefts and the rights, managing and maintaining speed.
