Surf spot guide · Southwest Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka
A soft, forgiving reef at Marshmallows, ideal for learners and fun on bigger swells.
In front of the Ticket to Ride Surf House, ‘Marshies’ a staple surf spot for all intermediate surfers and usually the first introduction to surfing a ‘reef’ break. There’s a few different peaks offering slightly different degrees of difficulty and whilst the crowds are heavy you can always get a wave. Lineup Positioning: The main peak is quite obvious so sit here if you want long rights and shorter more powerful lefts, however the middle of the also break offers a peak and there are lefts and some rights found in front of the Insight Hotel. Wave Targeting: Sit and wait for the bomb peaks at the main peak, or sit on the shoulder and get the ones that other surfers fall off of. For a less hectic experience paddle down towards ‘Insights’, just be careful getting out there as there is a reef shelf full of urchins which is sketchy at low tide. Tips & Progression Focus: Taking big drops, turns on the lefts, gaining speed on the rights.
Multiple peaks over reef where crowds guarantee you'll find a wave.

Direct beach access with parking nearby. You paddle out from the small beach beside the Insight Hotel. The paddle out and back is long and there is no clear channel, so be a confident swimmer and check your leash before you go: if it breaks it is a long swim in.
