Surf spot guide · Southwest Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka
Devil Island offers powerful reef breaks with stunning scenery in Southwest Sri Lanka.
High Waves
Large waves up to 2.0m expected at Devil Island (Sion). Peak conditions around 9:00 PM.
Exercise extreme caution when entering the water. Strong currents and large waves present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
Named after the original Surf Camp in the area, or the big island behind the waves, ‘Sion’ is a beautiful spot just south of Ahangama town in Goviyapana which has three different peaks, the middle peak being the best offering a 250m left which is great for turns and a racier right. On a bigger swell, it’s truly a good wave. It has got more crowded over the years, but it works in windy conditions so you can always get a quiet surf. Lineup Positioning: Sit on the main peak and take off slightly on the shoulder otherwise you probably won’t make the drop or make it round the section. Wave Targeting: Main peak bombs. Tips & Progression Focus: Focus on big drops, making the sections, cutbacks on the walls and hitting the end section.
A 250-metre left where cutbacks carve the wall before the final section closes.

A five-minute tuk-tuk from Ahangama town, heading west along the Galle Road. Turn off at the opening in the palms where the islet becomes visible from the street, then walk down to the beach and paddle out. At low tide a rocky causeway runs most of the way out to the islet.
