Surf spot guide · Southwest Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka
Powerful reef/beach break at Kabalana, fast lefts and barreling rights for experienced surfers.
High Waves
Large waves up to 2.0m expected at The Rock (Kabalana). Peak conditions around 9:00 PM.
Exercise extreme caution when entering the water. Strong currents and large waves present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
The Rock on Kabalana Beach is named because there’s a huge rock behind the waves which somehow creates a big A-frame peak. The left is long and the best wave in the south to do turns on. The right is shorter but punchier. The peak is always busy and the drop is steep! It’s a high-performance wave best suited for experienced surfers, while intermediates may find it challenging and crowded on smaller days. The paddle back can be tricky on bigger sets, and the shallow reef demands care. When the swell is moderate, learners can occasionally find soft, peeling waves near the beach, but the main break stays full-on. Lineup Positioning: Sit on the shoulder and let the crowd hustle each other on the peak. Wave Targeting: Take the lefts which look like they are going to closeout because they won’t and you’ll get a really long ride with a wackable wall. Tips & Progression Focus: The wave breaks through the windy part of the day, so get quiet waves after lunch. When big it’s a shitshow, just watch. Focus on turns on the left, cutbacks and hitting the lip.
A-frame peak where the left's deceptive closeout walls offer longest rides in the south.
