Surf spot guide · Gran Canaria, Spain
Fast, wedging southern beachbreak famous for its powerful backwash that launches bodyboarders into inverted airs.
Playa de las Mujeres is a secluded sand-bottom beachbreak tucked into the southern tip of Gran Canaria near Maspalomas, best known as a premier bodyboard spot rather than a stand-up destination. The wave owes its character to a pronounced backwash that transforms the shorebreak into a steep, wedging ramp ideal for inverted airs, 720s and radical aerial manoeuvres. Peaks are steep and fast rather than long-walled, with the bowly shape and wedging power delivering quick, punchy drops before the wave throws and closes. The break is highly tide-sensitive: mid to rising tide is when the banks behave, with too much water flattening the backwash effect entirely. S swells are the only reliable trigger, meaning the spot can sit flat for weeks before a south groundswell lights it up. It is good when on, but conditions rarely align. The surrounding landscape is dramatic, framed by Montania Arena and the wide Maspalomas dune system.

Often crowded, particularly in summer when tourists fill the beach even in flat conditions. On a working S swell the lineup fills quickly with bodyboarders who know the spot.

a flat south day is a wasted trip
Time arrival for mid to rising tide when the backwash wedge is sharpest
Intermediate and above stand-up surfers can work the outside peaks but the wave rewards committed rail-to-ramp surfing rather than cutback carving
Bring a bodyboard or sponge for the best experience
Check swell direction carefully because SE swells wrap less reliably than true S
