Fast, hollow close-out beachbreak on Gran Canaria's east coast, best suited to bodyboarders and experienced surfers hunting quick barrel
La Garita is a compact, punchy beachbreak sitting on the east-facing coast of Gran Canaria near the village of the same name in the municipality of Telde. The break is dominated by fast, hollow rights that close out more often than not, though the occasional bowl section opens up long enough for a short tube or a trick above the lip. Waves arrive with a steep, vertical takeoff driven by NE to E swells that funnel directly into the shallow sandbanks. The bottom is sand throughout, but the shallowness and high-energy shore dump mean the impact zone can be punishing during bigger sets. Mid to high tide is the optimal window, with an incoming tide filling the banks and softening the worst of the close-outs. Optimal swell size runs from 0.6 m to 1.8 m; larger swells tend to push the break into full close-out mode. A westerly or south-westerly wind keeps the faces clean, which happens reliably during the Canary Islands' summer trade-wind window.
