Playa de Salinetas is a tide-sensitive right-hand reef break located on the east coast of Gran Canaria near the town of Telde. The wave breaks over an uneven submerged reef at the southern end of the black-sand beach and fires into a thick, fast barrel that runs for up to 50 metres before shutting down. Its defining characteristic is its extreme tidal dependence: the window of perfection sits within roughly 40 minutes either side of mid tide, after which the wave either closes out or becomes too shallow to ride safely. A solid NE to E swell of at least 0.9 metres is required to get the banks firing, with the wave wrapping around the reef and throwing a powerful, critical lip. The takeoff is abrupt and committed, with the reef dry-sucking beneath you from the first stroke. There is no margin for hesitation and the shallow uneven bottom means wipeouts are consequential. Westerly winds are the offshore, arriving as the trade winds build on the eastern side of the island.
