Hollow a-frame reef peaks off Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas, firing on NW swells at mid to high tide.
La Barra is the submerged reef that stretches across the northern end of Las Canteras bay, forming a natural breakwater for the beach behind it. On the right swell it throws up powerful, hollow a-frame peaks that pitch fast off the shallow uneven reef, producing short but punchy barrels. Both lefts and rights are on offer, though wave length is typically under 50 metres before the wave backs off into deeper water. The break requires at least mid tide to cover the shallower sections of reef and is best approached rising into high, when the faces fill out and the entry is forgiving. Swells from NW through W and N light it up most reliably; a southerly wind provides the cleanest offshore conditions. A long paddle from the shoreline is unavoidable, and there is no obvious channel, so reading the sets before committing is essential. The reef is progressively eroding and a thriving urchin colony now covers much of the bottom, making falls consequential.
