Surf spot guide · Gran Canaria, Spain
A remote, freight-train A-frame reef off Gran Canaria firing thick barrels on NE-E swells - experts and bodyboarders only.
El Picacho sits on a submerged reef reached by a long paddle from the shore near Moya on Gran Canaria's northeast coast. The break is a powerful A-frame that throws out heavy, square barrels on both the left and right, with the right the larger and more dangerous of the two. Waves jack quickly over the shallow section, producing airdrop takeoffs and freight-train sections that demand full commitment from the moment you drop in. Positioning is everything: the impact zone is relentless and the boiling reef below makes a bad wipeout costly. The break needs overhead NE to E swell to switch on and either calm conditions or a southerly wind to keep faces clean. Consistency is low given how specific the swell window is, but when it fires it delivers world-class barrels in uncrowded water. The spot is popular with bodyboarders who find the thick, hollow tubes well-suited to their craft. Deep water surrounds the shallow working section, so the paddle out is long but manageable once you find the channel. A free car park sits near the access point. No facilities at the break itself.

Crowds are occasional given the low consistency and expert difficulty. When conditions align, bodyboarders make up the core of the lineup and space is relatively generous given the long paddle required.

the impact zone shifts with swell direction and wrong positioning means a serious hold-down. Target NE-E swells of 2m or more with a southerly or calm wind for the best barrels. Bodyboarders dominate on the heaviest days and handle the airdrop entries well. Give yourself time for the long paddle and pick the channel carefully. Low tide to mid tide is the working window
high tide kills the wave.
