Surf spot guide · Gran Canaria, Spain
Long, fast right-hander over a boulder reef that needs a solid NW swell to fire - the bigger it gets, the better it performs.
El Alto is a right-hand reef break sitting over a boulder-and-sand bottom on Gran Canaria's northeast coast near Moya. The wave needs a proper NW swell to wake up, and its character rewards patience: when a clean groundswell of 1 metre or more hits the reef at low to mid tide, the result is a long, fast wall running 200 to 500 metres with steep, committed sections and occasional bowl pockets that demand sharp rail work. The takeoff is vertical and punchy rather than drawn out, and the wave accelerates through the mid-section rather than fattening off. A southerly offshore holds the face and keeps things shapely. At smaller sizes the break is workable for confident intermediates chasing performance turns on open walls; as the swell pushes past 2 metres the speed and steepness climb steeply, rewarding surfers who can read the line early and commit to a high-line. The boulder reef is covered at mid and high tide, reducing risk but also clipping the wave's best sections. Consistency sits at moderate levels given the northwest swell requirement, so timing matters.

Moderate crowds when the swell is running. The spot is known enough locally to draw a competitive lineup on good NW swells, but gaps appear between sets and on smaller or mid-season days.
