Surf spot guide · Gran Canaria, Spain
Mellow black-sand beachbreak on Gran Canaria's north coast, a forgiving summer option when the Atlantic is flat.
Vagabundo is a sand-bottom beachbreak sitting on Gran Canaria's north coast near the town of Guia, flanked by dramatic volcanic cliffs and fronted by a striking black-sand beach. The wave is slopey and medium-paced, peaking in both directions with easy, well-covered takeoffs and room for cutbacks rather than barrels. It is fundamentally a small-swell spot: N and NW groundswells in the 0.6-1.2m range keep conditions manageable, while anything larger closes out the banks or simply doesn't hold shape. Low to rising tide is the optimal window, with mid-tide sometimes offering the cleanest walls. A southerly wind goes offshore and is the default when trade winds ease in summer. Consistency is low overall; the break earns its reputation as a summer fill-in when nearby reef spots are too small to bother with. The volcanic scenery and quiet atmosphere compensate for the modest surf on offer. Strong currents run along the beach and should not be underestimated despite the gentle wave face. Booties are advisable given sea urchins on the bottom.
