Surf spot guide · Gran Canaria, Spain
Forgiving sand beachbreak near Las Palmas with a wide swell window, slopey a-frame peaks suited to longboarders and beginners.
Molokai is a sand-bottom beachbreak on the north coast of Gran Canaria, sitting a short drive east of Las Palmas near the town of Arucas. The break picks up pulses from a wide arc - north through northwest, west and even easterly wind swells - making it one of the more consistent options on the island when other spots are blocked by swell direction. Peaks are slopey, medium-paced and well-covered rather than hollow, favouring cutback-style surfing and longboarding over barrel hunting. Takeoffs are easy and forgiving, and the a-frame layout gives both lefts and rights from the main bank. Mid to high tide is the sweet spot; the wave tends to get fat and lose shape at low water. The surrounding neighbourhood is calm and hassle-free with clean water and free car park access. Sea urchins are present on the bottom, so booties are worth wearing. The spot sits within a cluster of breaks - Los Enanos, El Comedor and Boquines are all within one kilometre - giving options when Molokai goes flat or closes out.

Rarely crowded. The spot draws a low-key local crew and the odd visiting longboarder, leaving plenty of space on the peak even on good days.
