Moledo do Minho sits at the mouth of the Minho River, which marks the natural border between Portugal and Spain. The river's outflow builds and shifts sandbars that, under the right combination of NW swell, SE wind and a low-to-mid incoming tide, stack into long hollow rights running 200-500m along the beach. When conditions align the wave can be exceptional - fast, bowly and draining over the sand with a speed that rewards experienced surfers who can read the constantly migrating peak. The southern end of the beach hosts more sectioned reef-influenced lefts that tend to be less congested than the main rivermouth setup. The spot is well established on the North Portugal surf circuit and carries its reputation with a corresponding crowd - expect a packed lineup whenever the swell is overhead. Localism is a real factor here and has been consistently noted across multiple sources, so reading the lineup before paddling out is strongly advised. The river mouth also introduces estuary pollution, particularly after rainfall, which is worth factoring into session timing. Parking is free and available near the beach. A surf school and surf shop serve the area for those needing equipment.
