São João da Caparica is a 1.4-kilometre sand-bottom beach break between Cova do Vapor and Praia do Norte. Multiple mobile peaks produce both lefts and rights, ranging from mellow whitewater to fast, pitching or occasionally hollow sections. West to northwest swells and easterly winds are preferred, with mid tide generally offering the best bank shape. Summer is typically smaller and softer, while autumn and winter bring larger, more powerful surf. The beach suits beginners and improvers, while intermediate surfers can make the most of clean green waves on mid-sized days.
