Buarcos delivers one of the longer right-hand point rides on the Portuguese Atlantic coast, wrapping around the rocky headland below Cabo Mondego on a mixed reef and sand bottom. The wave is a carver's wave rather than a tube hunter's - steep takeoffs feed into long, linking sections that can run 200-500m when the swell is generous. It needs at least 1m of swell to properly activate, and on a solid westerly or south-westerly push it holds size well without shutting down. The power profile is wrapping and fast rather than hollow, rewarding rail surfing and drawn-out turns over repeated air sections. Intermediate surfers with good wave-reading ability will get the most from it; beginners should look elsewhere given the uneven reef sections and strong rip currents that run on the incoming tide. Easterly winds are the classic offshore here, and the break handles north winds better than most points on this stretch of coast. Despite its quality and length, the lineup draws a consistently large crowd - this is one of the busiest points in central Portugal, and a tight local contingent holds priority on the better sets. Early mornings on mid-week swells offer the best chance of space. Parking is available at the point with a short walk to the water.
