Le Prado.

Le Prado is Marseille's main surf beach, a sandy city break channelled between seawalls and groynes along the southern waterfront. The peaks are generally soft and forgiving - crumbly rather than hollow, fat rather than powerful - with short rides rarely exceeding 50 metres. Backwash off the structures adds a layer of chop that keeps the wave messy, and the well-covered bottom means no shallow surprises. It fires on SW swell, with anything from SE through W also capable of producing rideable waves. A NE wind cleans the face up, though the Mediterranean's limited fetch means truly good days are infrequent. The spot is tide-agnostic, so there's no optimising around tidal windows. Le Prado's appeal is its accessibility - it sits within Marseille proper, easy to reach and forgiving enough for beginners and longboarders to learn without consequence. That accessibility is also its biggest drawback: the water shares space with wave sailors and bodyboarders in numbers, and big-city stormwater pollution is a genuine concern after rain. The adjacent Escale Borely section, immediately to the north, carries a smaller crowd and gives beginners more room to work with. For something more technical nearby, La Verrerie breaks over rocks a couple of kilometres to the south and offers a different experience when Le Prado is too crowded or too small.
