Rare but rewarding Mediterranean reef peak with longer lefts at St Jean, firing only on strong, sustained E-S swells.
La Ciotat is a Mediterranean reef peak that only truly shows its hand when easterly swells run hard and long enough to wrap into the bay - a combination that happens a handful of times each season. The main break at St Jean throws up a peak over an uneven reef platform, with the left being the standout: a medium-paced wall that steepens quickly off the boil-dotted reef and runs for 50-100m before closing out. The right is shorter and less defined. Waves are steep-faced and punchy rather than hollow, welling up sharply over the shallow sections. It can handle well over a meter when the E-S swell is sustained, but requires that prolonged easterly fetch to build real size. The spot sits within the wider La Ciotat headland setup - Arene Cros on the next headland offers a similar reef arrangement but leans more toward NE swell than NW wind to work properly. Entry is straightforward from the beach with car parks directly above, though navigating the uneven reef on the inside requires awareness. Sea lice and jellyfish are seasonal presences, and the submerged reef sections need respect at lower water. Crowds sit at a moderate level when it fires - word travels fast in a region where quality waves are scarce - but the infrequency of good conditions means the lineup rarely gets truly overwhelming.
