La Couronne.

Cap Couronne presents two distinct breaks that function almost as separate waves, selected by surfers according to the prevailing wind. On the southern side, Vieille-Couronne produces a powerful, tubey left that runs through two recognisable sections and stands as one of the genuinely rare spots along this stretch of the French Mediterranean that can hold solid overhead surf. When SE winds blow, this is the side to target. Swing around to l'Arquet and the setup flips: a hollow right that can be outstanding but attracts serious territorial attention from a tight local crew. The whole zone sits over uneven reef and breaks across all tides, making it accessible whenever a swell arrives - though that event itself is infrequent given the fetch constraints of the Med. The Mistral, which shuts down much of the coast, actually serves as offshore here, and onshore conditions are more workable than at many nearby spots. In oversized SW conditions, the bay at Ponteau offers a sheltered alternative. Entry requires navigating the rocky shoreline carefully; the small enclosed bay creates swirling currents that can carry the inattentive toward the cliff faces, particularly during building sets. The local crew is skilled and established - the rights at l'Arquet are explicitly contested territory. Newcomers should read the lineup thoroughly before committing.
