Bandol sits deep inside its own bay on the Var coastline, a location that simultaneously protects it from the dominant Mistral wind and starves it of swell. The main break is the Renécros reef, an uneven platform that generates a short, steep right and a longer left - both requiring a committed takeoff over shallow rock. The right can get genuinely hollow when conditions align, while the left offers more room to work. A few kilometres east, the Portissol ledge sits inside another small bay, well-shielded from northerly winds; it throws occasional punchy barrels over a very shallow bottom, trading length for intensity. Both spots demand solid S-SW swell to push energy deep into the bay, which is part of why they rarely fire. The Mediterranean's limited swell fetch makes consistent surf uncommon here, but a proper SW groundswell with NW Mistral blowing will light up Renécros and reward patience. Sea urchins colonise the reef throughout, and the shallow sections leave little margin on the way down. The local crew is tight-knit and territorial - drop-ins and overcrowding are not tolerated. Arrive respectful, observe the pecking order, and sessions can be rewarding. When Bandol is flat, the S-facing reefs around the Six-Fours peninsula to the east offer broader swell exposure.
