Sables d'Or is one of the central peaks along the Anglet beach stretch, breaking over sand between two jetties that help hold shape and add punch when the banks line up. Swell angle plays a decisive role here: westerly pulses tend to build the longer, more workable rights, while northerly influence shifts the energy toward tighter, hollower lefts with tube potential. The jetty rips run consistently and, if read correctly, offer a way out through heavier surf without taking a beating through the impact zone. The wave handles the full tidal range and tolerates more swell than the more exposed beaches north of the jetties before shutting down — making it a go-to when size builds. Optimally, a solid NW swell with an easterly wind is the target combination. Peak quality is real on good days, with steep, fast walls and occasional genuine tubes, though flat spots appear as the swell wells up. Surfline of sight from the waterfront parking makes this one of the easiest spots to assess without leaving the car. Summer transforms the lineup: lifeguards rope off a swimming lane along the right jetty, squeezing surfers into a narrower corridor, and the crowd factor pushes to its peak. Off-season offers a notably different experience — the banks can be exceptional and the lineups thin out substantially. Localism is an established reality here.
