Côte des Basques holds a place in surfing history as the beach where the sport first took root in France, and it remains one of the most welcoming stretches of sand on the entire Atlantic coast. The wave itself is a gently walled, medium-paced A-frame breaking over a flat sandy bottom, with two consistent peak zones: one hugging the headland to the north and a second defined peak further down the beach. The offshore islands to the west filter and organise incoming swells, producing forgiving, crumbly faces that work best in the 0.5-1.5m range. When solid W to NW groundswell arrives and pushes into the 1.5-2.5m zone, energy builds noticeably, particularly toward the southern end of the beach where the wave steepens. The spot fires on W and NW swells with a SE wind keeping faces clean. Low to rising tide is the window - by high tide the beach disappears entirely beneath the waterline, ending all surf sessions regardless of conditions. Entry and exit are straightforward from the wide sandy shore at low to mid tide, with the headland at the north end serving as the primary landmark. Blvd du Prince de Galles runs directly behind the beach with a surf shop and school on the front. Parking fills fast in summer. The lineup is dominated by beginners, longboarders, and surf school groups throughout the season, making for a good-natured but chaotic crowd dynamic. Those seeking less traffic can drift toward Marbella to the south, where rocky outcrops create more technical conditions and thin out the numbers significantly.
