Boucau sits at the mouth of the Adour river where a long, curved jetty deflects incoming swell energy into the sandbanks, producing point-style lefts with hollow sections and powerful running walls. Waves typically run 50-100m before backing off, and the combination of bowly, wrapping shape with fast, hollow character makes this a demanding wave even at moderate size. It handles a wide range from small and punchy through to heavy, large surf on solid W swells - the optimal direction - with the window widening toward N on the right groundswell angle. SE winds provide the cleanliest conditions. While the spot technically works at all tide stages, outgoing tide tends to expose the banks most favourably. Size range sits roughly in the 0.6-3.7m range before it becomes seriously committing. Entry requires reading the Adour's outgoing currents, which run hard and are effectively mandatory transport to the lineup at any real size. A sunken ship on the seabed adds a genuine hazard below the surface. The surrounding industrial landscape is bleak, parking is paid, and the water quality suffers from the heavily industrialised estuary - river contamination is a persistent concern, especially after rain. The lineup reflects the environment: tight, often crowded, with a demanding local vibe that treats inexperienced visitors accordingly.
