La Madrague.

La Madrague sits on the Anglet stretch of the French Basque Country coast, where a pair of jetties interrupt the otherwise uniform sand beach and give migrating sandbars something to anchor against. The result is a predominantly left-hander that builds steep, slopey walls with decent speed when the bank is right - though the same jetty influence that creates the wave also makes it notoriously difficult to predict. Conditions swing wildly between sessions depending on where the sand has settled since the last swell. The wave runs best from low to mid tide; a big high tide swamps the banks and kills the shape entirely. Solid NW swell is the sweet spot, while the broader W-to-N window still produces rideable surf. An offshore easterly wind grooms the faces and is the standard morning condition. The break earned lasting recognition when it hosted a women's WCT event, confirmation that the banks can, on their day, produce genuinely quality surf in the 0.3-2.4m range - though it gets easily overpowered when swell jumps above that window. Rip currents run alongside the jetty structures and are a consistent feature, particularly on falling tide. Water quality can be affected by nearby river/estuary outflow, especially after rain. Crowds match the spot's reputation - expect a busy lineup most days, with free car parking making access easy from the Anglet seafront road.
