Surf spot guide · Southwest Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka
Hikkaduwa is a lively reef break offering consistent and challenging waves and a vibrant surf scene in southwest Sri Lanka.
Main Reef is a consistent A-frame with long lefts and shorter, faster rights. Small waves suit confident intermediates, while bigger swells bring heavier drops and barreling rights. Lower tides help manage backwash, but the inside can get shallow and tricky. Paddle out via the left-side channel or from Beachbreak; avoid paddling beside the right over the reef. Locals and long-term expats are friendly, but respect in the take-off zone is essential. Not for beginners. Lineup Positioning: Join the older English ex-pats (me included), sit on the peak and wait your turn. Wave Targeting: Avoid the really peaky ones as they tend to fizzle out into nothing. Tips & Progression Focus: Shouldn’t be giving this secret away but if you’re a patient surfer, sit just behind the obvious boil and wait for the best wave of the day. Focus on top turns, cutbacks and floaters.
