Derecha del Cartel.

Derecha del Cartel is a right-hand reef break sitting just south of the more famous Spanish Left in Playa de las Americas, on the southern coast of Tenerife. It breaks over a shallow, uneven lava reef and produces some of the longest rides in the area, with wave length recorded at 200 to 500 metres on a good NW swell. The wave lines up well from the outside, drawing energy into a series of peeling bowl sections that well up and wrap through the mid section before delivering fast, hollow tube opportunities on the inside. The takeoff is critical and vertical, demanding a committed approach, but the wall that follows gives intermediates and advanced surfers room to build speed and work through progressive turns before the tube sections arrive. It handles size better than the neighbouring Spanish Left, working from 0.6 metres up to around 4.5 metres, and the uneven reef means boils and subtle speed changes keep surfers alert throughout the ride.
