Surf spot guide · Terceira, Portugal
Sheltered right-hand reef break north of the harbour, offering easy walls for beginners on N swells at mid tide.
Sao Fernando is a right-hand reef break sitting just north of the Porto Martins harbour on Terceira's east coast. The wave rolls over an uneven reef and produces workable, medium-paced walls that tend to back off as the tide fills in from mid - a characteristic that keeps the wave friendly but also limits its power ceiling. Wave faces are crumbly with occasional steep sections, staying well-covered rather than hollow, which makes for forgiving takeoffs and room to manoeuvre. The spot activates consistently on N swells that wrap into the bay, sheltered from the prevailing NW winds that clean up the face. It sits in a sweet spot of the swell window - a wide NW-to-E range hits the reef, with N being the optimum direction. At 0.6-1.8m the wave runs through its full repertoire; above that the reef sections become more pronounced and the rocks inside demand attention. Access is straightforward via the coast road one-way system from Porto Martins past Ponta Negra - free parking at a car park and roadside spots nearby.
Sometimes crowded, particularly popular with local bodyboarders and beginner surfers from nearby Porto Martins. Numbers pick up when the wave is working well.
