Quatro Ribeiras is the north coast's defining power break on Terceira, a left-hander that peels off deepwater cliffs, walls up and tracks across the bay before closing out on a boulder beach. It rarely activates below head-high - when W, NW or N groundswell pushes past 2m it becomes a long, fast wall that builds and accelerates through each section. A right-hander sits to the east of the main peak, slightly less intense but still powerful. The reef bottom and exposed cliff position concentrate force: strong currents run through the lineup, sharks have been sighted in the region, and jellyfish are a seasonal factor. Getting out of the water is the real challenge, particularly above mid-tide when surge against the cliffs makes exit unpredictable. A southerly offshore cleans up the face. Access is down a steep dirt road with no facilities whatsoever. Rarely crowded because the same conditions that activate the wave also filter out all but committed advanced surfers.
