Costa Nova sits along a narrow barrier strip between the Atlantic and the Ria de Aveiro lagoon, where a series of rock jetties partition the beach into distinct sandbar sections. The groynes dampen raw swell energy and stabilise the sandbars enough to produce reliably shaped peaks that break both left and right. On smaller swells the waves are punchy, fast, and occasionally hollow - genuinely fun across a wide range of abilities. When a solid northwest swell pushes in, the jetties can no longer tame the power and the paddle-out turns into a real battle against the current channelled between the structures. The beach runs almost continuously with Praia da Barra to the north, but the jetty influence here produces a distinctly different, more organised wave. Crowds sit at a moderate level for the region, aided by the fact that neighbouring spots on this stretch of coast absorb some of the demand on busy weekends. The candy-striped facades lining the seafront make this one of the most recognisable beach settings in central Portugal. A free car park sits directly behind the dunes. Entry is straightforward on small to moderate swells, but surfers should scout the jetty gaps and currents before committing on bigger days.

HAZARDS · KNOW BEFORE YOU PADDLE
On solid swells the paddle-out through the jetty sections becomes a significant effort and caught swimmers or inexperienced surfers can be pushed into the structures.
Free car park directly behind the beach. Roadside parking also available along the seafront strip. Entry to the water is a straightforward beach walk; choose a jetty gap appropriate to the swell size.
