Praia da Luz.

Praia da Luz sits in a sheltered bay on the western Algarve coast, its crescent shape bookended by two distinct pointbreaks rather than a simple beach peak. The bottom combines uneven reef with sand, and a nearby rivermouth feeds the sandbanks while also introducing stormwater runoff after heavy rain. The left off the western headland is the more demanding of the two: shallow, fast, and capable of producing hollow sections that close out quickly on bigger swells. The right, known as Rocha Negra, wraps off the eastern rocks with a more workable shape that intermediate surfers can read comfortably. Both flanks come to life on solid S swells and respond well to large W-NW groundswells wrapping into the bay; the optimal window is a SW swell with a northerly wind holding offshore. Waves range from around 0.9m to 3m and run for 100-200m on good days. The inside carries boils and submerged reef sections that demand awareness, particularly at lower stages of the tide. Crowds are moderate - the spot draws beginners to the mellow central beach section and the sheltered right, while the faster left thins out the field naturally. The beach draws a tourist-heavy summer crowd, so early sessions midweek offer the clearest water and least competition in the lineup.
