Waipaoa River Bar.

Waipaoa River Bar sits at the mouth of the Waipaoa River on the south side of Gisborne, a sandy rivermouth sandbar locally known as Big River. The shifting sandbars produce long, powerful right-handers that fire on solid S swells wrapping around East Cape or clean NE groundswells pushing directly onto the coast. Multiple peaks scatter across the bar with occasional lefts off the southern side, though the dominant ride tracks right along the main sandbar formation. This is a spot that rewards patience and commitment. When the bar aligns and swell arrives, wave quality jumps to excellent with rides stretching 200 to 500 metres. Strong rip currents run through the river channel and intensify with size, demanding respect and awareness of water movement. The lineup sees moderate traffic when conditions come together, drawing experienced locals who know the bar intimately. Access runs south from Gisborne via Centennial Marine Drive to the end of the road beside the river mouth. Worth a dedicated month-long stay during peak season to maximise the chance of scoring it with offshore westerlies grooming the faces.
