The Cliff.

The Cliff is a left-hand point break located at the end of the road past the Gisborne yacht club, where the coastline transitions from town beaches to the rockier shore toward Sponge Bay. The wave breaks over a mix of uneven reef and sand, producing rides of 50 to 100 metres on a solid south swell. Quality is rated good on its best days, though Stormrider describes it as an average left point - the wave rarely reaches the standard of the city's premier spots like Wainui or Tuamotu Island. The break needs a large S swell to fire, with a wider E to S window producing rideable surf. NE winds are offshore. Mid to high tide on an incoming push is the target, allowing the wave to clear the rocky bottom and produce a cleaner shape. Rocks are the primary hazard - scattered through the lineup and along the entry, they demand awareness at every stage of the session. No rips, localism, or shark concerns are flagged, making it one of the safer intermediate-level options in the Gisborne area. Most surfers head to Wainui or the rivermouth spots when conditions are good.
