Gizzy Pipe is Gisborne's most coveted beachbreak, a raw and powerful A-frame that owes its reputation - and its sandbars - to an unlikely source: the town's sewer pipe, which runs 3km out to sea and has, over decades, built up a succession of quality sandbars directly in its path. The result is a punchy, hollow wave that can deliver legitimate barrels on a good swell, drawing a tight-knit and highly skilled local crew who know exactly how to read the shifting banks. The wave works across all tides, though an incoming tide tends to produce the most consistent form, cleaning up the sections and extending the ride. On a solid southeast to east swell with a northerly wind, the sandbars light up with fast, top-to-bottom tubes on both lefts and rights. The close-out factor is real - many waves pinch shut without warning - so wave selection is critical. Only the most committed surfers will find the payoff sections. Crowd levels are high whenever the swell delivers. Gisborne has a deep surfing culture and the locals at Gizzy Pipe are experienced, territorial, and quick to identify visiting surfers. Respect in the water goes a long way. Rips are active, particularly near the pipe zone, and submerged obstructions beneath the surface demand awareness at low water. This is not a spot for beginners - the combination of powerful hollow waves, close-outs, rips, and a possessive local crew makes it strictly intermediate to advanced territory.
