Surf spot guide Β· East Cape, New Zealand
Hollow reef lefts off Tuamotu Island with long tube rides at The Bowl and intense rights at Inside Island.
Tuamotu Island delivers some of East Cape's most coveted reef waves when a medium E-S swell fills in, drawing local surfers out to The Bowl for long, hollow left-handers that peel along the southern reef with serious speed and tube potential. On optimal days - low to mid incoming tide, NNE winds, and a clean S swell - the peak to channel run can stretch 200 to 500 metres, offering rare barrel time in uncrowded New Zealand waters. The left is the headline act, mechanically hollow with critical takeoffs and multiple barrel sections that reward committed surfers. When a more easterly or large NE swell arrives, Inside Island lights up with intense, fast rights where NW winds go offshore, offering a completely different experience on the same island. Accessing the break requires either a 1.2km open-ocean paddle from Sponge Bay - a significant commitment before a single wave - or a boat ride, which local surfers often have an advantage accessing. The reef is shallow and boily throughout, with submerged hazards demanding respect. Waits between good swells are common, but when it fires the quality is excellent. Localism is real here - approach with respect, read the lineup, and earn your place. Sharks are a known presence in these waters.
