Wilkes is a compact, high-performance right-hander tucked below the hill that carries the Telo Islands' main lighthouse, sheltered from the N wind. The wave approaches the reef as a horseshoe peak, drawing surfers into what initially reads as a section about to shut down, then the bottom drops away and opens into a genuine barrel. What follows is a fast, bowly wall with enough face to fit three or four committed turns. The depth profile tells the whole story: boily through the mid-section, then shallow. The outgoing tide thickens the wall and extends the ride; dropping conditions produce the most defined barrel section. Wilkes sits right beside Schoolyards, without being the same wave.
