Surf spot guide · Sumbawa, Indonesia
Dirty Hippies is a heavy, slabby left-hand reef break in West Sumbawa offering steep, barreling waves over shallow reef that are best suited for advanced surfers.
Dirty Hippies is a lesser-known reef break on Sumbawa's southwest coast, located in the Kertasari area and favored for its fast, steep left-hand waves over a shallow reef. Renowned for its powerful, slabby lefts, the wave is relatively short but delivers deep barrels and a heavy shut-down section, making it one of the best left-hand waves in the world for experienced surfers. It works best on south to southwest swells ranging from 4 to 10 feet, with mid to high tide providing safer conditions. Access involves a short walk from the main road near Whales & Waves in Moro Bay, followed by careful navigation through a reef keyhole. The channel is well-defined for paddle-outs, but the impact zone contains large boulders and sharp coral, posing significant hazards alongside strong currents and board-breaking lips. This spot is uncrowded and attracts mainly hardcore surfers with advanced skills, as timing and experience are crucial to avoid injury. Both shortboards and longboards perform well here, with smaller days favoring the latter, though the heavy nature of the wave demands respect. The area is surrounded by beautiful scenery, adding to its appeal despite the challenging conditions.
