Surf spot guide · Sumatra, Indonesia
Mandiri is a long, powerful beach break with shifting peaks and consistent swell, ideal for intermediate and advanced surfers.
Mandiri is a powerful black sand beachbreak stretching between Tanjung Setia and Krui headland, known for its triangular, randomly breaking peaks shaped by an offshore reef that disperses incoming swells. It can deliver sharp, barreling peaks on small, clean, windless mornings and is a reliable swell magnet that rarely drops below head high. While it often looks inviting, strong rips and currents give the waves enough shape to turn close-outs into makeable sections for fast, committed surfers. The break offers both playful barrels and heavy hold-downs, becoming more challenging and powerful as it gets bigger, making it best suited for intermediate and advanced surfers. Despite its beachbreak appearance, it’s a high-energy setup that doesn’t handle much size or wind well and can quickly become demanding. The beach is accessible with ample parking, and surfers can explore various banks along its length.
