A fast, exposed righthander breaking over dead coral reef near the village of Alus-Alus on Simeulue's southern coast. The wave jacks up quickly over the shallow bottom, producing steep, bowly walls with barrel sections and a vertical, critical takeoff that demands commitment. The reef is super-shallow in places with boils showing through the surface, and the whole stretch shifts around, making it hard to read and harder to position on. Short rides in the 0-50m range, but intense ones. Mongoose picks up a wide swell window from SE through S to SW, with a consistency that delivers rideable surf more often than not. A northerly wind cleans things up, and the incoming tide tends to offer the best conditions across an otherwise tide-tolerant setup. Getting in and out of the water is the real challenge here. The reef is raised and uneven, and there is no easy channel to paddle through. Only surfers comfortable with reef navigation and shallow, fast waves will enjoy it. The upside of that difficulty is solitude. With so many easier-access waves scattered along the coast, Mongoose rarely sees more than a handful of surfers, even when it is firing.
