Dead Mosque is a hollow A-frame peak breaking over dead coral reef on Simeulue's south coast in the Alus-Alus area. The lefts are the prize, offering bowly, walling sections with vertical takeoffs and barrel opportunities. The rights are shorter but fast and worth riding. The wave wraps in from SE through SW swells, making it one of the go-to spots when northerly winds shut down the island's more exposed west-facing breaks. Consistency sits high for the region, picking up swell when other spots go flat. Getting in and out is the real challenge. The 2005 earthquake lifted the coastline nearly two meters, leaving the reef sharp and jagged. A small keyhole channel east of a beachside cafe is the only viable entry, and even with booties it demands confident reef-hopping skills. The wave handles size well technically, but the gnarly reef access means most surfers avoid it once it gets overhead, choosing to save their feet and skin. Crowds are virtually nonexistent. This is solo-session territory on the quiet side of an already remote island. Nearby at Big Wave Dave's, sketchier peaks work in similar conditions for those looking to spread out further.
